Passport Renewals Now Online

By Idy Perl
Want to travel but don’t have a current passport? Fear not, you can now
renew your passport online!
Earlier this morning the State Department announced that
U.S. Passport renewals will be able to be done online in a pilot program
that is now available to the public. This program was first introduced in 2021
but was halted in 2023 due to backlogs and delays. The State Department is
opening the program once again for a limited number of applications on a first-come
first-serve basis.
The online process will entail the passport holder filling
out their old passport information online in addition to their travel plans.
Additionally, an official passport photo will no longer be necessary, and
passport holders will be able to upload a photo from their phone onto the
website. The photo can’t be a selfie and must be in front of a white
background.
Those applying will be able to simply check out online with debit or credit card. The routine processing time for an online passport renewal is between 6-8 weeks.
