New Sensors Will Catch Heavy Trucks on Bridges

By Y.M. Lowy
The DOT is expanding its use of special technology that catches overweight trucks before they can damage roads and bridges. Sensors weigh trucks as they drive and automatically send tickets if they’re too heavy.
This system is already in place on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, where it led to a 60 percent drop in overweight trucks.
Now, it’s being expanded to 15 spots across the state. That includes bridges like the George Washington Bridge ,the Williamsburg Bridge, the Gowanus Bridge, and the Bear Mountain Bridge.
