Legislators Approve $1.3 Million for Local Food Banks, Significant Portion Allocated to Tomche Shabbos.
As a part of the $2 million allocation passed two weeks ago to support regional food banks, $325,000 will be designated for tomche shabbos, who is the largest kosher food pantry in rockland county. Tonight’s vote finalized the measure and officially wrote the funding into law.
The increased support comes as food banks and chessed organizations face sharp spikes in demand following widespread food stamp shortages. Tomche Shabbos has reported record numbers of families seeking weekly and Shabbos food packages.
The newly approved $325,000 will help the organization expand distribution and keep up with the growing needs of the community.
Community leaders thanked the legislators for their swift response during a challenging time for many families.
“I’m proud of the work of my fellow legislators, recognizing the urgent need and quickly getting together to allocate the funds to our local food pantries” said Legislator Joel Friedman.
“I’m also grateful to County Executive Day and his team, particularly chief of staff John Lyons, for promptly turning around and ensuring the funds reach our needy populations as quickly as possible in the most efficient manner, as the federal shutdown dragged on. I’m especially glad that they recognized the amazing work done by Tomche Shabbos of Rockland County, the largest kosher food pantry working with the Regional Food Bank, and allocated $325,000 on their behalf to serve the needs of people requiring kosher food.”
