House Passes Bill to Rename Haverstraw Post Office After Paul Piperato
By Y.M. Lowy
The US House of Representatives has approved a bill to rename the post office at 86 Main Street in Haverstraw as the Paul Piperato Post Office Building. The legislation was introduced by Congressman Mike Lawler.
The idea was first put forward during the previous Congress, when Congressman Lawler stood with local officials and members of the Piperato family to announce the effort. In February, RocklandDaily reported that the bill was being reintroduced. Now it has cleared its first major step with full passage in the House.
Paul Piperato spent more than thirty years in public service. He served fifteen of those years as Rockland County Clerk and became known as an innovator in county government. He helped modernize operations with a computer imaging system, brought in a round the clock online records portal, and expanded electronic services such as eFiling and eRecording. He also created RETURN THE F.A.V.O.R, a program that gives local benefits and support to veterans.
Congressman Lawler said Piperato’s work made county government more accessible and efficient and described him as someone who cared deeply for the people he served.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will be considered next.
