Hector L. Soto Memorial Highway Sign Unveiled in Haverstraw
By Y.M. Lowy
The new Hector L. Soto Memorial Highway sign was unveiled this afternoon at the corner of Route 202 and Rosman Road, marking a moment of recognition for a figure well remembered in the Haverstraw community.
Local officials joined the Soto family for the brief ceremony. Senator Bill Weber, Assemblyman Patrick Carroll, and Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips stood alongside relatives as the covering was lifted from the sign, officially naming the roadway in Hector L. Soto’s memory.
Soto served in the United States Air Force before beginning a 36 year career with the Haverstraw Police Department, where he worked his way from patrol to detective.
County Executive Ed Day thanked Senator Weber for taking our friend Héctor Soto into consideration. Ramón Soto, Assistant to the County Executive and one of Héctor’s closest friends, recalled that this project was a shared dream the two had spoken about during Héctor’s lifetime. “I remember sitting with Senator Bill Weber at a restaurant one day and asking him to help make this dream a reality. Thank you, Bill, for listening to me—thank you,” Ramón said.
Today’s unveiling placed his name on a well traveled stretch of Route 202, creating a lasting reminder of his decades of service.
