Great News for First Responders as New York State Quadruples Volunteer Tax Credit

Hatzolah members and volunteer first responders across New York State will soon be eligible for a significantly larger tax credit, following new legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul that quadruples the annual tax benefit for volunteer emergency responders.

Under the new law, eligible volunteer members will be able to claim an annual state income tax credit of $800, up from the current $200. For married couples who both qualify as volunteer emergency responders, the combined credit will increase from $400 to $1,600.

The increase comes as part of legislation signed by Governor Hochul on October 17, expanding financial benefits for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers throughout New York State.

The legislation was co-sponsored by Rockland County Assemblyman Aron Wieder in the Assembly and Senator Bill Weber in the Senate, both of whom played a major role in advancing the measure.

“I commend Governor Hochul for signing this vital legislation into law,” Assemblyman Wieder said. “Our volunteer first responders are heroes who put their lives on the line every single day to keep our communities safe. For nearly two decades this credit remained unchanged while these volunteers continued to save taxpayers millions.”

Senator Weber, who co-sponsored the bill in the Senate, also welcomed its signing, saying he was proud to help advance legislation recognizing the dedication and sacrifices of volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.

The expanded tax credit will take effect beginning with the 2027 tax year, meaning eligible volunteers will be able to claim the increased amount when filing their taxes in 2028. Volunteers will have the option of claiming either the state income tax credit or a qualifying local property tax exemption.

The new legislation is aimed at recognizing the dedication of volunteer emergency responders who give their time to help their communities, while also encouraging more people to join volunteer emergency services across the state.
