Giant Stairs Trail at Palisades Interstate Park Will Be Closed for Months
By Yisroel R.
Following a major rock slide at a popular hiking area in Palisades Interstate Park, as reported by Rockland Daily, park officials have announced the area will remain closed for an extended period.
The Giant Stairs section of the park was shut down after falling rocks and debris made the area unsafe. The Palisades Parks Conservancy announced the closure on social media, citing concerns over rockfall and damage to the trail, which draws hikers from across the region.
On Wednesday, New Jersey-side park superintendent Steve Shallop said the closure could last several months, and possibly until spring. He explained that officials need time to fully assess the damage and ensure the terrain and stone steps are stable before reopening the trail. Allowing the winter season to pass may be necessary before any safe reopening can take place.
The Giant Stairs trail has grown increasingly popular in recent years, offering a challenging four- to five-mile loop and scenic views along the Hudson River. Park officials said updates will be provided once the assessment is complete, though no specific timeline has been set.
For now, visitors are advised to avoid the area and check the park’s website and official alerts for the latest information on closures and trail conditions.
