New details have emerged in the deadly George Washington Bridge shooting Tuesday evening, as authorities have identified both the victim and the suspect, revealing that both men were Rockland County residents, with the shooter living in Haverstraw.
The suspect has been identified as 62-year-old Victor Romero of Haverstraw, a retired NYPD detective who has since been charged with murder in the death of 46-year-old Koran Irvine, a longtime Con Edison employee and Rockland County resident.
Romero, who previously served as an NYPD narcotics detective, was working as a driver for a company that transports executives. According to investigators, he was driving a company-owned Range Rover and was returning home to Haverstrawa after dropping off a passenger in Manhattan when he shot and killed Irvine.
As previously reported by Rockland Daily, Irvine was shot Tuesday evening, at approximately 7:15, following an apparent road-rage incident while entering the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge. Investigators say Romero fired a single shot at Irvine’s vehicle, fatally wounding him.
Surveillance footage helped detectives track down the vehicle, which was later located outside Romero’s Haverstraw home. He voluntarily reported to the 33rd Precinct for questioning Wednesday morning and was subsequently charged with murder. Authorities seized the Range Rover and were seeking a warrant to search his home.
Former Detective Romero had previously survived a shooting himself in 2000, when armed robbers entered his family’s laundromat in Brooklyn while he was off duty. He was struck by a bullet during that incident and retired from the NYPD the following year.
Meanwhile, heartbreaking details have emerged about Irvine, who had worked for Con Edison for 20 years and had celebrated his anniversary with the company just last month.
Neighbors described Irvine as a friendly and caring man who was always willing to help others. One neighbor recalled how he welcomed her family to the neighborhood with fresh eggs from chickens he raised at home.
Irvine leaves behind a wife and children, with his family remembering him as a devoted husband and father. Con Edison expressed its heartbreak over the tragedy, offering condolences to Irvine’s family, friends, and coworkers following the sudden loss of their longtime colleague.
The latest developments bring a heartbreaking new dimension to the shooting, as both the victim and the man accused of taking his life are residents of Rockland County, leaving a local family mourning a devastating loss with the criminal case moving forward.
