Former Congressman Eliot Engel, Longtime Representative of the Hudson Valley, Dies at 79

Eliot L. Engel, a fixture in Hudson Valley politics who represented New York’s 17th Congressional District for more than three decades, has died. He was 79.

Engel, who was Jewish, was widely recognized as one of the most prominent Jewish members of Congress during his tenure. A Democrat, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1989 to 2021, becoming one of the longest-serving representatives from the region. Known for his deep ties to Rockland and Westchester counties, Engel built a reputation as both a local advocate and a national leader on foreign policy.

Born on February 18, 1947, in the Bronx, Engel began his career in public service in the New York State Assembly before moving to the New York City Council. In 1988, he was elected to Congress, beginning a tenure that would span more than 30 years.

During his time in Washington, Engel rose to national prominence as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he played a significant role in shaping U.S. policy abroad. He was also known for his strong support of Israel and active involvement in issues of importance to the Jewish community.

Despite his high-profile work on the global stage, Engel remained closely connected to his district, frequently visiting Rockland County and maintaining strong relationships with community leaders. Constituents often described him as accessible and attentive, with a focus on local issues such as transportation, healthcare, and education.

Engel’s long career came to an end in 2021 following a primary defeat the year before, marking a generational shift in Hudson Valley politics. Even after leaving office, he remained a respected voice and elder statesman within the Democratic Party.

Leaders across the region are expected to remember Engel for his decades of service and his lasting impact on both his district and national policy.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
