Evacuation Recommendations Lifted Following Fire, Hazmat Incident and Explosion at Congers Pharmaceutical Facility
Authorities have lifted evacuation recommendations issued earlier Wednesday following a major fire, hazmat response, and chemical explosion at the Vitane Pharmaceuticals facility on Wells Avenue in Congers.
The incident began around 8:05 a.m. when smoke was reported inside the facility at 125 Wells Avenue, prompting a large emergency response. As firefighters and emergency crews worked to assess the situation, hazmat teams from Rockland and Westchester counties were called in to assist.
At approximately 9:22 a.m., a chemical explosion occurred inside the building, forcing first responders to evacuate portions of the site while continuing to manage the hazardous materials situation. One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the response. No other injuries have been reported.
As a precaution due to changing wind conditions, authorities recommended evacuations for dozens of nearby homes and approximately 12 commercial businesses. Witnesses reported that employees in nearby buildings were instructed to leave the area. Officials noted that most of the affected area consisted of businesses, with only a small number of residential properties nearby.
Later in the day, officials announced that evacuation recommendations had been lifted. Air quality continues to be monitored, though fire officials will make the final determination regarding safety conditions in the area.
The situation remains active as crews from multiple agencies continue operations at the facility. Authorities say the cause of the fire and subsequent explosion remains under investigation.
