Clarkstown Town Supervisor George Hoehmann Secures Major New Funds for Sidewalk Expansion in Central Nyack, Along With New Splash Pad Project Added to Planned Playground

A new round of Community Development Block Grants, totaling more than $500,000, will allow Clarkstown to move forward with a major sidewalk expansion in Central Nyack and complete funding for a planned playground across from the community center. The new grants also make it possible to add a splash pad to the project, along with additional parking to better serve families visiting the future park.
The playground was originally funded last year, but the town did not yet have enough resources to begin construction. With the latest grants, including awards of roughly $250,000 and $296,000, Clarkstown now has the full financial backing needed to build the playground, incorporate the splash pad, and enhance the surrounding area. Bidding for construction is expected to begin in the coming months.
A key part of the project focuses on improving walkability. Several blocks near the community center currently lack continuous sidewalks, creating gaps that make it difficult for residents to walk safely. The new funding will allow the town to fill in these missing connections, creating a sidewalk route that will link the playground area to Route 59 and into the greater Nyack area. The plan also includes adding new parking spaces near the future playground to make the area more accessible for local families.
The Central Nyack Community Center, built in the 1970s, is one of Clarkstown’s four community centers and the only one that has never had a playground. To prepare the site, the town has already purchased and demolished one nearby home and expects to close soon on a second. With funding now in place, the goal is to open the playground and splash pad next summer.
Supervisor Hoehmann expressed strong enthusiasm for the improvements, calling the project “a home run for our community.” He added that the initiative continues his administration’s long-term commitment to infrastructure and neighborhood investment. Since taking office, Hoehmann has overseen more than $100 million in townwide upgrades and secured over $50 million in grants for projects throughout Clarkstown.
