Democrat Cait Conley has won New York’s 17th Congressional District, defeating Republican Congressman Mike Lawler in one of the nation’s most closely watched congressional races and flipping a seat that Republicans have held since 2023.
Conley’s victory follows a highly competitive campaign in which several polls showed her holding a narrow lead over the two-term Republican incumbent. The race attracted national attention as Democrats worked to regain control of the House of Representatives, with the 17th District considered a key battleground.
A West Point graduate and former Army officer who served in national security roles, Conley centered her campaign on making life more affordable for Hudson Valley families, lowering healthcare and housing costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, and addressing government corruption.
Lawler, who first won the seat in 2022 and secured reelection in 2024, had maintained strong support in Rockland County’s Jewish communities. President Donald Trump personally urged Monsey voters to support Lawler in a direct Election Day message, underscoring the national attention of this closely contested race.
Conley will now represent Rockland and Putnam counties, along with portions of Westchester and Dutchess counties, when the new Congress takes office in January 2027. Her victory marks a significant Democratic pickup as the country awaits the outcome of other congressional races that will determine which party controls the House.
