Bernadette Tarantino was sworn in Friday afternoon as the new interim mayor of the Village of Hillburn, officially taking over following the resignation of longtime Mayor Joseph P. Tursi.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Hillburn Village Hall at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, October 30, with Tarantino moving into the interim mayor’s position after previously serving as deputy mayor and trustee.
As previously reported by Rockland Daily, Tursi announced his resignation in a letter to the Village Board and Hillburn residents, citing his upcoming relocation to another area. His resignation officially took effect that same day, Friday, October 30.
In his resignation letter, Tursi thanked residents, village employees and fellow board members for their support during his time in office, describing his service as mayor as an honor and saying he would work to help ensure a smooth transition before his departure.
Tarantino has served for years on the Hillburn Village Board and most recently held the position of deputy mayor, placing her next in line to take over the leadership of the village following Tursi’s departure.
Tarantino has been named interim mayor and will serve in the position until the village’s next election, when residents will have the opportunity to elect a new mayor.
With Friday’s swearing-in, Tarantino officially begins her tenure as interim mayor of Hillburn and takes over the village’s day-to-day leadership operations.
