Winter Parking Restrictions Take Effect Across Rockland County
Yisroel R.
With the winter season underway, residents across Rockland County are being reminded of overnight and snow-related parking restrictions that are now in effect or will take effect later this month.
The rules vary by municipality. Some towns and villages have blanket overnight parking restrictions that remain in effect throughout the winter regardless of the weather, while others restrict street parking only during snow, sleet or icy conditions.
In the unincorporated parts of Town of Ramapo, parking restrictions are weather-based. Vehicles may not be parked on public roads when snow is falling or accumulating, when snow is forecast, or when roads need to be cleared by plows or salt trucks.
Several villages within Ramapo have their own separate rules. Airmont, Montebello Chestnut Ridge, and Kaser prohibit street parking between midnight and 6 a.m. from November 1 through April 1, regardless of weather conditions.
In New Hempstead, parking restrictions are weather-based, with vehicles prohibited from remaining on the street when snow or sleet is falling, has accumulated or is forecast, or when plowing or salting may be necessary.
Wesley Hills has a year-round restriction prohibiting street parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., regardless of weather. The village also has additional restrictions during snow or sleet conditions, including when winter weather is forecast or when plowing or salting may be needed.
Hillburn also uses weather-based restrictions. Vehicles may not be parked on village roads while snow, sleet or ice is accumulating or after accumulation until the roadway has been cleared. Parking is also prohibited between midnight and 6 a.m. when snowfall has been forecast.
In Pomona, parking is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. throughout the year. From November 15 through April 1, the blanket restriction begins earlier, with street parking prohibited between midnight and 6 a.m. regardless of the weather.
Outside Ramapo, the Town of Clarkstown prohibits overnight parking on public roads between midnight and 6 a.m. from November 15 through April 1, regardless of weather conditions.
The Town of Stony Point prohibits parking on public roads between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November 1 through March 31, also regardless of the weather.
In the Town of Orangetown, overnight parking is prohibited between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November 15 through April 15, subject to certain exceptions under town law.
The Town of Haverstraw prohibits overnight parking between midnight and 6 a.m. from November 15 through April 1, regardless of weather conditions.
The restrictions are intended to keep roads clear for snowplows, salt trucks and emergency vehicles throughout the winter. Residents are reminded that the rules differ depending on the municipality and should make sure they are familiar with the regulations where they live.
