Wellness Weekly 15: Eggs And Potatoes, Potatoes And Eggs

By Idy Perl
With Pesach just around the corner, we’re gearing up to eat our body weight in matzah, eggs, and potatoes. There is a lot of conflicting information about those vegetables, so let’s find out what’s actually true.
Myth Buster
Myth: Eggs can raise your blood cholesterol level and
should be avoided.
Truth: Current studies show that the cholesterol in
eggs doesn’t have a significant effect on cholesterol levels, as that is
usually impacted more by saturated fatty acids. For the average person, eating
an egg or two a day is perfectly fine.
Healthy Hacks
Trying to get some stubborn burnt grease and cooking debris
off a nonstick pot or pan? Try this hack to get it all off.
Cover the bottom of the pan with water and add a liberal
amount of baking soda, around ¼-1/2 cup, to make a solution. Bring the solution
to a boil over the flame, and then let it cool down. Scrub off the baking soda
and food residue with a sponge or brush.
Wellness Wisdom
Potatoes get a bad rep as starchy vegetables, but they’re
actually rich with vitamins and benefits, especially when eaten with the skin. Potatoes
have vitamin C, which is an antioxidant, as well as potassium and fiber. In fact,
the darker the potato the more nutrients and antioxidants it has. Sweet potatoes
are a great source of vitamin A, which is important for immunity and eye health,
and purple potatoes have antioxidants that prevent heart disease and boost
brain health. While potatoes are starchy, eating a balanced amount of potatoes
can be beneficial.
Mind And Body Exercise
Feeling tired and sore from all the cleaning? Try the simple
locust yoga pose to relieve lower back pain and fatigue.
Lay down on your stomach with your arms straight down your
sides and palms up. your legs should be extended and together, heels slightly
to the side and toes touching.
Slowly lift your head and chest, just a bit or until you can
look straight ahead. You can raise your arms too or stretch them to interlace
your fingers behind your back. To deepen the stretch, lift your legs as well. Hold
the pose for a minute, and rest before repeating.
