Voters Approve New Thiells Fire House

Voters Approve New Thiells Fire House

By Idy Perl

A $24 million loan for the reconstruction of the Thiells Fire Station has been approved following a public vote on Tuesday, April 30th.

The Thiell’s Fire Department, which covers Thiells, Garnerville, Pomona, and parts of West Haverstraw, Palisades Interstate Parkway, High Tor State Park, and Harriman State Park, has been operating out of their cramped station on Route 202 since 1960. The station barely has enough room to store the fire trucks and the diving team’s boat, among other equipment, and doesn’t meet current state codes.

The $24 million bond would allow for the purchase of a 4-acre property down the road from the current fire house, and the construction of a new, two-story, 23,000 square foot fire house.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who voted and to the community for their continued support,” Thiells Fire District Commissioner Robert Masiello said. “Moving forward with the construction of a new main station will ensure that we provide our firefighters with a safe and functional fire station where they can properly train and effectively respond to the growing needs of our community.”
