Village of Spring Valley unanimously Approves Finklestein Library Extension
The Village of Spring Valley Planning Board has approved the expansion of the Finkelstein Memorial Library, advancing a major project that will significantly enhance the library’s services and facilities for the community.
The village board, in order not to slow down the application waved the special permit requirement.
Rockland Daily previously reported that the expansion, already underway with the demolition of a neighboring structure, will be carried out in phases over the coming years and is supported through a combination of state, federal, and local funding.
The project calls for a new three-story extension that will provide much-needed space for expanded programming and services, aimed at meeting the needs of the diverse population that utilizes the library.
Plans for the extension include dedicated classrooms for ESL instruction, citizenship and job readiness programs, a large community room for events and lectures, and space for counseling services. In addition, a multicultural area will expand the library’s collection and better serve residents of all backgrounds.
The construction will also allow for improvements within the existing building, including an expanded children’s room, additional seating, and upgraded infrastructure such as a new staircase and elevator to improve accessibility throughout the facility.
As part of the Planning Board’s approval, the library was also asked to enhance its outdoor space by incorporating a butterfly garden, along with a recreational seating area and an outdoor covered bus shelter.
