Village of Spring Valley Honors Chaverim Members Who Rescued Baby From Hot Car

by M.C. Millman

Last night, the Village of Spring Valley honored the two individuals who saved a baby who had been locked inside a rapidly heating car on the afternoon of Sunday, July 2.

The six-month-old had been in the car on Homer Lee Avenue for at least twenty minutes on a day when temperatures were well up in the nineties before Heber Hernandez noticed some passersby making a commotion. Being a member of Chaverim's Shabbos patrol, Hernandez knew just who to call, and Chaverim volunteer Yitzchok Sabel was there moments later, rescuing the baby from the jaws of death as the interior of the car had heated up to well over 120 degrees.

Hernandez and Sabel received certificates of honor at last night's Village of Spring Valley board meeting, where they were recognized for their life-saving actions.

"When I heard about the rescue of the baby from the hot car in Spring Valley," Spring Valley Trustee Yisroel Eisenbach shares with Rockland Daily, "I wanted to make sure we recognized the life saved and those who made it possible. There have been too many tragedies from incidents similar to what nearly happened in this case. Creating awareness to always check your car before getting out during the summer and acknowledging the instances when we all work together to save one life is worth publicizing and celebrating whenever we can."
