Traffic Alert: Major Traffic Delays This Afternoon in Rockland After Truck Hits Overpass
by M.C. Millman
Due to ongoing bridge repair on the South Broadway overpass, there is a significant 12-mile delay on I-87 Southbound, near exit 10 in Nyack.
The delays were caused by an oversized tractor-trailer transporting large pipes that hit the overpass early this morning, around 6:45 a.m. The truck hit a hollow steel tower, damaging the overpass girder beam, causing the three left lanes of the Tappan Zee bridge to close due to falling debris and pending bridge inspection.
By this afternoon, traffic has backed up onto Route 59, with commuters reporting delays in Monsey all the way to Nyack that are worsening as rush hour approaches.
"I'm on 59 heading towards Nyack. It's gridlock," one commuter reported on social media this afternoon.
"In the last hour, I have probably driven 50 feet," another reported on social media.
Delays are only expected to increase as the evening commute begins. Drivers should seek alternate routes until further notice.
