Tractor-Trailer Jackknifes on Infamous Route 287 Stretch Minutes Before Munkatch Van Accident Injuring Ten

Tractor-Trailer Jackknifes on Infamous Route 287 Stretch Minutes Before Munkatch Van Accident Injuring Ten
by M.C. Millman

A tractor-trailer jackknifed overnight Tuesday on Route 287 near the New York State border in Mahwah at around 2:30 a.m. - thirty minutes before an accident in nearly the same location sent ten van occupants to the hospital, some in serious condition, as reported by Rockland Daily here.

The northbound side of the highway was closed after the tractor-trailer accident, but not soon enough to save the van filled with Monsey Munkatch bochurim.

The accident involving the Target tractor-trailer on northbound Route 287 near mile marker 64 required the Bergen County Hazardous Materials unit to clean up a fuel spill.

According to Daily Voice, authorities say slick conditions from road repaving made the conditions of the road even worse for the tractor-trailer.

The Munkatch van that came shortly after drove through the same unsafe road conditions, which could have been behind the driver losing control in that accident as well.

New Jersey State Police are investigating the cause of the Target crash also in nearly the exact same spot as a similar incident this past weekend. Despite the outcry from area residents and commuters, this particular stretch of highway continues to be a site for numerous such accidents over the years, with nothing being done to alleviate the dangerous location exasperated by the excessive speed drivers are prone to in that area.
