Today in History: The Boeing 747 Takes Flight!

By Y.M. Lowy

In January 1970, aviation history soared to new heights with the first commercial flight of the Boeing 747, the world’s first “jumbo jet”! This game-changing aircraft, known for its iconic humpbacked shape and sheer size, revolutionized air travel.

Pan American Airways was the first to take this giant bird to the skies, with a maiden voyage from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to London Heathrow. The flight carried 332 passengers and 18 crew members.

The 747’s massive capacity and wide-body design made long-haul flights more affordable and accessible, opening up air travel to millions. It was a true pioneer, leading the way for future airliners and changing the way the world flew forever.

Today, after over five decades of incredible service, the 747 remains an aviation icon, loved by travelers and aviation enthusiasts alike.
