Today In History: Osama bin Laden Killed In Special Operation

By Idy Perl
On May 1st, 2011, then president Barach Obama
announced that a special U.S. military operation has succeeded in killing Osama
bin Laden, the notorious mastermind behind the September 11 attack.
After years of gathering intelligence to pinpoint where bin
Laden was hiding out, a special operation, code-named Operation Neptune Spear,
was carried out by a team of U.S. Navy SEALs from the United States Naval
Special Warfare Development Group. The SEALs flew from Afghanistan to Abbottabad,
Pakistan, where bin Laden’s compound was located.
The SEALs then infiltrated the compound by scaling the walls
and quickly cleared the floors of the compound to get to bin Laden. There are
conflicting reports of how exactly the operation went down, but bin Laden was
reportedly first shot when he peered out of his room and down the stairs as the
soldiers were making their way up and was killed by several gunshots when the
soldiers got to his room.
The entire raid from when the SEALs entered and exited the compound took only 38 minutes.
