Thruway Authority Moves to Modernize Fueling Stations Across New York

The New York State Thruway Authority is moving forward with a plan to modernize fueling stations at all 27 service areas along the Thruway, continuing a broader redevelopment effort across the statewide highway system.
The Authority issued a Request for Proposals seeking a long-term company to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain the fuel stations through a new lease agreement. The current fuel contracts are set to expire in March 2027, and the new agreement is expected to run through June 2054.
The project follows the $450 million redevelopment of the Thruway service areas, which included new buildings, restaurants, restrooms, and other traveler services. Officials say the next phase will focus on the fueling stations themselves, with upgrades aimed at improving service, reliability, and the overall travel experience.
The plan covers 29 fueling facilities across the 27 service areas along the Thruway. The selected operator will be required to keep fuel available around the clock and maintain service for motorists, commercial drivers, commuters, and other Thruway travelers.
The proposal also includes a push to expand electric vehicle charging for medium and heavy-duty vehicles, with charging infrastructure planned at five fueling locations. Those sites would be spaced within 200 miles of each other to support longer-distance travel for vehicles.
The Thruway Authority said fuel service will continue during the transition, except when closures are needed for construction or inspections. Officials also said no two consecutive fueling locations in the same direction will be closed at the same time.
