Swimming Closed At Harriman’s Lake Tiorati After Harmful Bloom Found In Water

Swimming at Lake Tiorati Beach in Harriman State Park has been temporarily closed after state officials found a harmful bloom in the water, shutting down a popular summer spot used by many Rockland-area families.

The issue is a heavy buildup of tiny plant-like organisms in the lake. When they spread in large amounts, they can release toxins into the water, which can make people sick if they swim in it, touch it, or accidentally swallow it.

New York State Parks said the beach will remain closed for swimming until the water quality improves. The rest of Harriman State Park remains open, but visitors heading to Lake Tiorati should be aware that swimming is not currently allowed.

Health officials warn people and pets to stay away from water affected by this type of bloom, since exposure can cause skin irritation, stomach illness, or other health issues.

Anyone planning to visit Lake Tiorati should check for updated state park information before heading out, as the swimming area will only reopen once officials determine the water is safe again.
