Statement from Assemblyman John W. McGowan Concerning a Recent Break-In at his Home

Statement from Assemblyman John W. McGowan Concerning a Recent Break-In at his Home

I write this to inform everyone of a recent incident at my home in Pearl River.

On Friday, December 13, 2024, just after 4:00am, multiple individuals wearing masks were present at my home, brandishing what appeared to be crowbars, and at least one perpetrator forcibly entered our home while my wife Christine and I were asleep. Thankfully, our dogs barked and woke us up, allowing me the opportunity to chase them off and call the police.

This experience was terrifying and alarming, to say the least, but no one was injured, and nothing was stolen. We are so very grateful of this outcome, especially with Chrstine being eight months pregnant. We are incredibly appreciative of the Orangetown Police Department and Rockland County Sheriff’s Department for their prompt response, diligent efforts, and care shown to us.

This is an active investigation and, as such, I cannot disclose everything at this time. However, I believe it’s important for everyone to be on alert. As a former Rockland prosecutor, I understand crime is present in every community, but this experience struck a new chord with me and certainly made us more cognizant of the reality that anyone, at any time, can become the victim of a crime, even in the presumed safety of one’s own home.

I urge everyone, especially during this holiday season, to take reasonable precautions to protect yourselves, your loved ones, your property, and your homes. Make sure to lock your doors, windows, cars, and keep your valuables secured. People sometimes commit crimes because they are desperate or addicted, but other times it’s because they are trying to steal and hurt others. Those who broke into our home fall in the latter category, but regardless, we must remain vigilant.

To fellow dog owners: always listen to your dogs, and give them an extra pat on the head or scratch behind the ears—their loyalty in such a time of need can never be underestimated and can, as in our case, make all the difference in the world.
