Authorities have identified the young man who tragically drowned Saturday in Harriman State Park.

New York State Police said Darwin J. Chuiza-Tagua, 22, of Spring Valley, lost his life at Turkey Hill Pond late Saturday morning.

Chuiza-Tagua had gone hiking in the park with a friend and entered the pond afterward to cool off. Witnesses reported that around 11:35 a.m. he waded into the water but suddenly went under and did not resurface.

Emergency responders, including State Police troopers, the Aviation Unit, the Underwater Recovery Team, and New York State Park Police, began an immediate search. His body was later recovered approximately 20 feet from shore in about 10 feet of water.

Police say the drowning appears accidental, with no signs of foul play.
