See It: Stunning Northern Lights Dazzle Monsey Skies; Could Be Visible Again Tonight

The Northern Lights made a rare appearance over New York last night, and there’s a good chance they’ll return tonight. If skies stay clear, you might just catch a glimpse of the glowing colors that have been lighting up the northern United States this week.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a strong geomagnetic storm continues to push the auroral “viewline” just north of New York. If it strengthens, people in upstate New York could see the lights low on the horizon.

Last night’s display came from a powerful solar eruption that sent a cloud of magnetized plasma, called a coronal mass ejectiona\, straight toward Earth. The result was a vibrant show of green, pink, and purple light rippling through the night sky.

NOAA’s latest forecast includes a G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm watch for tonight, meaning auroras could reach farther south than usual.

If you live near a lot of light pollution, the bright skyline will likely block the view. But if you’re in a darker area, with a clear view of the horizon, it’s worth stepping outside around midnight and looking up.

If you missed the Northern Lights last night, tonight might be your chance. Find a dark spot, let your eyes adjust, and take a moment to look out for one of nature’s most beautiful sights.
