Congressman Mike Lawler held a school bus safety meeting today at Ramapo Town Hall together with Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, State Senator Bill Weber, New Square Mayor Izzy Spitzer, Kaser representative Feivy Mermelstein, Herschel Horowitz from the Community Outreach Center, local police departments, emergency responders, and private bus companies to discuss ways to improve school bus safety across the town.
Also attending were Ramapo Police Chief Daniel Hyman, Spring Valley Police Chief Richard Oleszczuk, Ramapo OEP Coordinator Josh Hans, Hatzoloh EMS representatives, Chaverim Coordinator Yossi Margaretten, and others involved in transportation and public safety.
The meeting focused on awareness, education, and prevention, with discussions on how to better educate children, parents, schools, and drivers in an effort to reduce accidents involving children and school buses.
Pedestrian safety was also discussed, especially near school zones and areas where children regularly walk to buses. Participants spoke about the importance of communication and cooperation between schools, bus companies, law enforcement, and the community to help improve safety.
“Keeping our children safe on their way to and from school is a shared responsibility,” Congressman Lawler said after the meeting, adding that bringing different groups together helps create practical ideas and solutions to improve safety and awareness throughout the community.
Officials said the meeting was part of an ongoing effort to continue improving school transportation safety throughout Ramapo.
