Rockland Writes: Giving Credit Where It’s Due — Senator Bill Weber’s Continued Advocacy for Rockland’s Jewish Community
I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for New York State Senator Bill Weber and to set the record straight regarding his longstanding efforts and advocacy on behalf of the Jewish community in Rockland County.
Having met with Senator Weber on numerous occasions regarding a variety of community concerns, I can personally attest to his accessibility, responsiveness, and genuine commitment to helping his constituents. He has consistently demonstrated a willingness not only to listen to concerns but to take meaningful action to address them. He regularly directs his staff to pursue specific follow-up measures and personally reaches out to school district administrators, government officials, and other decision-makers to help resolve issues.
One particularly significant area of his advocacy has been non-public school transportation, especially within the Suffern Central School District. Senator Weber played an instrumental role in brokering an agreement that allowed private schools operating their own transportation fleets to submit bids and compete for transportation contracts serving their students. This represented a meaningful departure from the District's longstanding practice of maintaining a single transportation contract and opened the door to greater flexibility and opportunities for schools to meet their students' transportation needs.
Beyond this broader policy achievement, Senator Weber and his office have advocated on behalf of dozens of individual families who encountered difficulties obtaining the school transportation services to which their children were legally entitled. These efforts often required persistent communication with district officials, attention to the particular circumstances of individual families, and a willingness to challenge administrative decisions that unfairly deprived children of transportation services.
Importantly, Senator Weber has also recognized that the underlying challenges surrounding non-public school transportation require a broader legislative solution. To that end, he has introduced legislation at the state level intended to shift the full financial responsibility for mandated school transportation services from local school districts to New York State in districts with unusually high percentages of non-public school students. Rather than merely providing partial state reimbursement, his proposal would have the state cover the entire cost of these services, effectively eliminating the direct financial burden on qualifying districts. This approach would remove a significant source of financial pressure that can lead districts to restrict services, cut corners, or resist providing transportation to eligible students. It is a thoughtful attempt to address the structural problem rather than simply responding to individual disputes as they arise.
Senator Weber's advocacy has extended well beyond school transportation. He has also been actively engaged in assisting the Rockland Eruv Association in its efforts to expand the existing eruv to accommodate additional neighborhoods that have developed adjacent to its original boundaries. This effort involves navigating governmental and regulatory considerations, coordinating with various officials, and helping ensure that the needs of growing Jewish communities are understood and appropriately considered.
What stands out to me most about Senator Weber is that his engagement does not end when a meeting concludes or a constituent's concerns have been acknowledged. He listens carefully, asks relevant questions, assigns specific follow-up responsibilities to his team, and frequently becomes personally involved in reaching out to the officials whose cooperation is needed to achieve results.
There is a meaningful difference between an elected official who is willing to hear a constituent's concerns and one who is prepared to invest the time, political capital, and sustained effort necessary to address them. In my experience, Senator Weber has consistently demonstrated the latter.
It is important that his record be evaluated fairly and that the substantial work he and his office have undertaken on behalf of the Jewish community be recognized. While not every issue can be resolved immediately or to everyone's satisfaction, there should be no question that Senator Weber has been an engaged, accessible, and effective advocate on matters of genuine importance to our community.
I believe in giving credit where credit is due, and Senator Weber and his staff deserve recognition and appreciation for their continued efforts. I am grateful for his willingness to work collaboratively with community representatives, his commitment to pursuing practical solutions, and his dedication to ensuring that the concerns of his constituents receive serious attention.
Sincerely,
Andrea R. Jaffe
