Rockland County Warming Center to Open November 1 Ahead of Winter Season

Yisroel R.

As the colder winter months approach, Rockland County has announced that its Warming Center in Pomona will officially open for the season on November 1, providing shelter and essential services to homeless individuals throughout the county.

The Warming Center, located at the Dr. Robert L. Yeager Health Center in Pomona, will be operated by the Rockland County Department of Social Services (DSS) and can accommodate up to 75 homeless single adults each night.

The center will open at 5:00 p.m. each evening, allowing guests to stay overnight until the following morning. During particularly cold weather, when temperatures with the wind chill drop below 32 degrees, the center will also remain open during the day.

In addition to providing a warm and safe place to sleep, the center will offer hot meals, showers, and laundry facilities. Staff members will also be available to assist guests with applying for benefits, finding employment, securing housing referrals, and accessing other supportive services.

County Executive Ed Day praised the county’s staff for their dedication to helping those in need, emphasizing the importance of providing a safe place for vulnerable residents during the harsh winter months.

To help individuals reach the center, the county will provide transportation from several locations, including the Spring Valley Bus and Train Station at 5:30 p.m., 6:10 p.m., and 8:15 p.m., and the Building L bus shelter at the Pomona Health Center campus at 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The county has also released informational flyers about the Warming Center in multiple languages, including in Yiddish, to help ensure that information about the available shelter and services reaches residents throughout the community.

For additional information, residents can contact the Rockland County Department of Social Services at (845) 364-2332 or (845) 608-6670.
