Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Honors Dispatchers During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week

By Y.M. Lowy

As National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is celebrated across the country, the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office is placing a spotlight on the critical work of its Communications Division.

In Rockland County, the Communications Division is being recognized for the critical role its radio operators play every day. These dispatchers are not just answering phones. Each one is triple-certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Fire Dispatcher, and Emergency Police Dispatcher through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch.

Rockland County dispatchers handle more than 250,000 calls every year, and that number continues to grow.

The division is also one of the most highly accredited in the area, meeting strict standards set by state and national organizations. In fact, it is the only agency in Rockland County to earn several of these top recognitions.

Behind the scenes, a strong quality assurance program reviews thousands of calls each year to make sure every caller receives the best possible response.

While their work often goes unnoticed, these dispatchers are the first point of contact in emergencies, calmly guiding callers and coordinating help when it matters most. This week serves as a reminder of the vital role they play every single day.
