Rockland County Purchases 132 Acres in Sloatsberg Nearly $2.9 Million

Rockland County Purchases 132 Acres in Sloatsberg Nearly $2.9 Million
The Open Space Institute acquired 132 acres known as the Eagle Valley Assemblage to protect crucial water resources and strengthen a vital corridor of undeveloped land between Sterling Forest and Harriman State Parks.
The Open Space Institute intends to convey the land purchased for close to $2.9 million to Rockland County, which is exploring opportunities to best utilize the space. These include creating a new county park on the land and linkages between the train station and other protected areas nearby.

The Open Space Program was first launched in 1999 by former County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef to acquire areas of scenic beauty, environmentally sensitive lands, farms, and Hudson River waterfront areas for Rockland. The last Open Space purchase was made in January as reported by Rockland Daily here. The first purchase for the Open Space Acquisition Program was made of 3.34 acres situated to the west of Route 45 and the east of the Palisades Parkway in Pomona Pomona this past April, as reported by Rockland Daily here. The second Open Space Acquisitions Program purchase was of a vacant residential property at 20 New Valley Road in New City from Davies Farm Inc.  Eleven additional nominated parcels are currently under consideration.

County Executive Ed Day says, "The County is excited to partner with the Open Space Institute on preserving these two beautiful properties in the Village of Sloatsburg as parkland. It is rare these days to find undeveloped parcels of this size in Rockland, and I am proud to be able to protect them for the benefit of future generations."
