The upper level of the George Washington Bridge was shut down for hours last night amid a massive police presence following a shooting believed to be connected to road rage that left a Rockland County man who worked for Con Edison dead.
The shooting occurred Tuesday evening, October 20, as the 46-year-old victim was driving a Volkswagen Golf toward the westbound upper level of the bridge, when he reportedly nearly collided with another vehicle.
According to reports, an occupant of the other vehicle took out a gun and fired a shot, striking the victim. The driver lost control of the vehicle and came to rest against the median near the middle of the bridge.
Emergency responders transported the victim to Englewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting prompted a major police response and the closure of the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge for several hours, causing significant traffic disruptions. The roadway reopened shortly before 1:00 a.m this morning.
The shooter fled the scene, and authorities are reviewing surveillance footage as the investigation is underway.
