Rockland County Issues Fire Weather Warning for Friday Amid Strong Winds and Dry Conditions

Rockland County Emergency Management is warning residents to exercise extra caution on Friday, October 30, as strong winds and dry conditions are expected to create an elevated risk of fires spreading rapidly across the region.

According to county officials, northwest winds are expected to gust between 20 and 30 mph, while relative humidity levels will hover around 40%. Combined with dry vegetation and other combustible materials, these conditions could allow even a small fire to spread quickly.

Officials are urging residents to take extra precautions, particularly when using machinery or equipment that could produce sparks, and to ensure that cigarette butts and other potential ignition sources are properly extinguished and disposed of.

Residents are also reminded to keep matches and other fire-starting materials away from dry vegetation and to be mindful of outdoor activities that could accidentally ignite a fire.

While the advisory does not indicate that any fire is currently burning, officials stress that the weather conditions could make it difficult to contain a fire once it starts.

Rockland County Emergency Management is asking everyone to remain alert and take simple preventive measures to help protect homes, neighborhoods, and surrounding wooded areas.
