Rockland County 911 Operations Temporarily Shifted to Backup Communications Center in New City

By Rockland Daily Staff

The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office 911/Communications Division relocated radio operators to its Alternate Emergency Communications Center (AECC) at the Sheriff’s Office main campus in New City as part of a planned operational transition.

The move was scheduled to allow routine maintenance and repairs at the Division’s primary Emergency Communications Center (ECC) in Pomona. Radio operators reported to the New City facility early this morning for the day tour, operating from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with full communications operations expected to continue from the AECC for a 24-hour period while work at the main center is completed.

Beyond facilitating maintenance, the temporary relocation served as an important test of the Division’s continuity and resiliency plans. Officials noted that such “fail-over” operations are critical for ensuring uninterrupted emergency communications in the event of a disaster or equipment failure.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the AECC is fully capable of assuming all essential functions of the primary communications center without disruption. The two facilities are linked by redundant wired and wireless systems and utilize Motorola Solutions’ Dynamic System Resilience (DSR) technology, providing full redundancy for the County’s public safety radio communications network.

Chief Adam Feuer and Division command staff reported no significant issues during the transition, describing the operation as a complete success. “Had this been an actual emergency situation, I doubt anyone in Rockland County would have noticed any changes, which is exactly what we’re looking for,” Feuer said. “This backup site ensures that, even in a disaster scenario, radio operators can always be available to answer the phone and send help.”
