Responses to Survey Reflect Community Interest in Opening Farmers Market in Pearl River

by M. C. Millman

After conducting an exploratory survey to ascertain community interest in establishing a weekly farmers market in Pearl River, the over a thousand responses reflect a strong interest in moving forward with the new endeavor.

Weekly farmers markets gain dedicated followers who return regularly for the fresh, local, home-grown offerings on location as well as the entertainment some venues provide.

According to RCBJ, Town leaders are presently in talks with Joe Serra, the experienced operator of the Sunday Piermont Farmers Market, regarding opening a similar entity locally. Pearl River is banking on Serra, the Piermont Famers Market operator, to overcome Pearl River's past failures in the farmers market field in order to make this new endeavor a success.

Rockland County has a limited number of farmers markets overall. One option is the decades-old Nyack Farmers Market which is open at Depew and S. Broadway on Thursdays.

Future considerations still being hammered out include location, day of the week, and vendor availability.
