Ramapo Police Department to Upgrade TASER and Pistol Technology Following Town Board Approval Yesterday

By Yisroel R.

At the January 5 Town Board meeting, the Town of Ramapo approved a proposal supporting continued investment in public safety and law enforcement technology. The following statement was released by the Ramapo Police Department regarding the approval and its impact.

The Ramapo Police Department would like to thank the Town of Ramapo Police Commission and Mona Montal, Chief of Staff to the Town Supervisor Michael Specht, for their continued support and for approving the proposal to extend our partnership with Axon Enterprise, at the January 5 Town Board meeting.

This approval allows the Department to transition from the expiring TASER 7 platform to the new TASER 10, Axon’s most sophisticated Taser Energy Weapon to date. The TASER is, by far, the most effective less-lethal tool available to law enforcement and plays a critical role in reducing the risk of injury to both police officers and the individuals they encounter.

In addition, the Department has recently equipped and trained officers with new Sig Sauer P320 service pistols outfitted with optics and weapon-mounted lights, representing cutting-edge technology on both the lethal and less-lethal fronts.

We appreciate the Police Commission and Ms. Montal for their support. This approval is yet another example of how Supervisor Specht, Ms. Montal, and the Town Board continue to prioritize the safety of our officers and the public we serve here in the Town of Ramapo.

Chief Daniel Hyman explained, “The Taser 10 Energy Device is a significant advancement over the Taser 7. It nearly doubles the effective distance and offers a more advanced deployment system, giving our officers an improved less-lethal option when force is necessary and appropriate. Ultimately, it’s another tool that helps reduce the risk of injury to both officers and the people we encounter.”

Supervisor Michael Specht said, “We continue to support the Ramapo Police Department with cutting-edge law enforcement technology because we know it helps keep our officers safer and also protects the public they serve.”
