RABIES ALERT ISSUED AFTER WILDLIFE EXPOSURE IN MAHWAH PARKS

Rockland County health officials are alerting residents following a confirmed rabies case in a wild animal found in Bergen County, New Jersey.

A beaver that tested positive for rabies was discovered after recent activity at Lake Henry and Continental Soldiers Park in Mahwah on May 3, 2026. Officials are urging anyone who visited either location on that date and may have had any contact with the animal to take immediate action.

Rockland County residents who believe they may have been exposed are asked to contact the Rockland County Department of Health right away at 845-364-2594 for guidance and evaluation.

Health officials are strongly reminding the public to avoid approaching, touching, or attempting to handle any wild animals under any circumstances, as rabies is a serious and potentially fatal disease once symptoms appear.

Anyone who believes they had direct contact with the animal should seek medical advice promptly, even if no bite or scratch is visible.
