Piermont Fire Department Warns Public After Oil Spill Containment Boom Is Tampered With

The Piermont Fire Department is urging the public not to interfere with emergency mitigation equipment after a containment boom deployed during an oil spill response in a local creek was reportedly tampered with.

According to the department, firefighters responded Tuesday evening to an oil spill in the creek and deployed containment booms to prevent the spread of contamination. When crews returned the following day to remove the equipment, they discovered that one end of the boom had become detached.

Officials said a vessel subsequently ran over the boom rather than waiting for its removal, raising concerns about the potential impact such actions could have on environmental protection efforts.

The department emphasized that hazardous materials incidents are taken very seriously, particularly when they affect sensitive areas such as local salt marshes. Fire officials noted that the boom successfully performed its intended function and warned that tampering with containment equipment during an active spill could worsen environmental damage and complicate cleanup operations.

The department also reminded residents that spill responses are coordinated with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which monitors mitigation efforts and oversees environmental protection measures.

Fire officials are asking the public to avoid removing, moving, or interfering with any equipment deployed during emergency operations and to allow responders to complete the necessary containment, monitoring, and cleanup procedures.
