Pfizer in Rockland County Announces Impending Layoffs

by Mindy Cohn
Pfizer filed a notice in December with the New York Department of Labor reporting that it plans to lay off hundreds of employees at its research facility in Rockland County.
The Pfizer facility is located at 401 North Middletown Road in Pearl River and is one of Pfizer's nine major research and development sites, developing and manufacturing vaccines for over a century.
285 employees out of the 1,012 on location are expected to be affected. The reason given for the layoff on the New York State Department of Labor Warn notification was "economic," presumably stemming from uncertainty regarding the demand projections for the company's COVID-19 products.
According to fiercepharm.com, Pfizer cut 2023 revenue projections by $9 billion in October and announced it was launching an "enterprise-wide cost realignment program.
Pfizer also announced at the beginning of the fourth quarter that as many as 791 employees could be laid off on February 12 from its corporate office in New Jersey if those employees do not choose to relocate to another Pfizer location.
The layoffs are expected to start February 12 and conclude by March 25.
