NYS Thruway Warns Drivers After Another Over-Height Truck Strikes Low Bridge

A tractor-trailer recently struck a low rail overpass after reportedly ignoring multiple over-height warnings along the route. According to authorities, the driver later said he was “just following the GPS.”

Officials say incidents like this highlight a growing concern about drivers relying solely on navigation systems instead of paying attention to roadway warnings. In many locations with low-clearance bridges, drivers encounter several alerts well before reaching the structure.

These typically include posted height restriction signs, flashing warning lights, electronic message boards, and advance alerts designed to notify drivers that their vehicle may be too tall to safely pass.

Transportation officials emphasize that bridge strikes are entirely preventable when drivers follow the posted warnings and know the height of their vehicle.

Drivers operating tall vehicles — including tractor-trailers, box trucks, RVs, and rental trucks — are urged to check vehicle height before traveling and remain alert to clearance signs. Navigation systems can be helpful, officials say, but they do not replace the driver’s responsibility to follow roadway warnings.

Authorities continue to remind drivers: Know your vehicle’s height and always watch for posted clearances.
