Nyack Awarded $7.2 Million to Upgrade Water Treatment Plant

By Y.M. Lowy

The Village of Nyack will receive $7.2 million in State and federal grants and low-cost financing to upgrade its surface water treatment plant, part of a new round of funding announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. The money will be used to install two sets of granular activated carbon filter vessels, a major improvement that will help remove emerging contaminants and keep the village’s drinking water safe.

The funding comes from New York’s Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds, which provide low-interest financing to help local governments afford essential water and sewer infrastructure projects. These programs pull from both State and federal sources, including the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Governor Hochul said the new investments are designed to protect public health while easing the financial burden on local taxpayers. “This investment is about making essential water improvements more affordable for communities across New York,” she said. “By lowering costs for local governments, we are helping ensure New Yorkers can rely on safe, clean water without facing added financial pressure. These upgrades also strengthen our long-term resilience, ensuring our water systems can withstand future challenges and remain sustainable for decades to come.”

Across the State, the Environmental Facilities Corporation approved a total of $269 million for water and sewer upgrades. These projects range from replacing lead service lines to expanding treatment for contaminants, all aimed at modernizing aging infrastructure and reducing risks to local communities.

For Nyack, the $7.2 million investment marks a major improvement, positioning the village to improve water quality while avoiding steep rate increases.
