New York Congressional Finalized Map Preserves NY's 17th District

New York Congressional Finalized Map Preserves NY's 17th District

By M. C. Millman

New York’s 17th District remains largely unchanged after the modified set of House maps including New York's 17th Congressional District received a vote of approval this afternoon by the State Legislature, putting an end to four years of back-and-forth turmoil over district lines as reported by Rockland Daily most recently here.

This afternoon's vote preserved Congressman Mike Lawler’s district with a redesigned map that was almost identical to the recommendations of the Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC).

"I eagerly anticipate Congressman Lawler's continued representation of Rockland County and the rest of the 17th Congressional District for many years to come. I look forward to being elected again with him this November,” says Senator Bill Weber after casting a decisive affirmative vote this afternoon to approve the map.

Senator Weber previously voted to approve the IRC map for the 17th Congressional District on Monday, February 26, as well.

"I was glad to see both the Senate and Assembly exhibit restraint when it came to their final map," Congressman Mike Lawler shared. "While there were numerous attempts throughout this process to engage in a partisan gerrymander, the final map largely abides by the New York Independent Redistricting Commission’s bipartisan version and ensures fair, competitive districts across the state. Today’s bipartisan vote is a win for the voters and a win against partisan gerrymandering. Now it’s on to November."
