New and Improved Vehicle Inspection Stickers for NYS

New and Improved Vehicle Inspection Stickers for NYS

by M.C. Millman

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles announced Tuesday that, going forward, vehicle inspection stickers will provide enhanced security with vehicle-specific information as the older versions of the stickers are phased out.

New features on the inspection stickers, which inspection stations can print on-site instead of acquiring the supply from the  DMV,  are the inclusion of the car's mileage and license plate number. The personalized numbers will be printed on the inspection sticker along with a QR code that replaces the barcode used previously. The colors of the inspection stickers will continue to change based on the expiration year.

DMV is working with partners in law enforcement and local government to inform them about the new stickers so that they recognize them as legal and valid. Law enforcement will be able to confirm the validity of the certificate being displayed based on the information displayed on the sticker.

The inspection stickers are already circulating in some locations. The complete transition is expected by the end of 2023, although inspection stickers from the previous design will be valid, in some cases, until the end of 2024.
