Membership Card Requirement for Costco Gas is a No-Go in Rockland County

Membership Card Requirement for Costco Gas is a No-Go in Rockland County

Costco gas stations across the U.S will begin to require that customers show their membership cards before filling up at Costco gas stations as of Tuesday, July 5.

The measure is being taken as Costco stations are known to generally sell less expensive gas than elsewhere.

Because of the price difference, lines have therefore become prohibitively long for members trying to fill their tanks. The length of the lines of those waiting for gas even prevents Costco shoppers from being able to turn into the parking lots. Despite Costco’s determination, such a requirement is against the law in Rockland.

A County law disallowing such a practice was passed in the 1970’s in the aftermath of the gas shortages at that time.

Jim Elcik, Director and Public Advocate for the Rockland County Office of Consumer Protection/Weights & Measures, says there will be county inspectors at Costco in Nanuet on Tuesday, July 5, to ensure the existing Rockland County law is enforced.
