Haverstraw Police Remind Drone Regulations

Haverstraw Police Remind Drone Regulations

By Y.M. Lowy

As drones sightings become more popular, the Haverstraw Police released the regulations to understand the rules and guidelines surrounding their use.

Drones can only be operated on private property that you own or with the permission of the property owner. Operators must follow Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines, including maintaining a safe altitude and steering clear of restricted areas. However, there are clear boundaries on where drones cannot be flown. This includes critical infrastructure like government buildings, power plants, and water treatment facilities, as well as sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and Town parks. Flying drones over large gatherings or public events is also prohibited due to safety concerns.

Privacy is another key issue. Recording or observing individuals without their explicit consent is illegal and considered an invasion of privacy. Drone operators must register their devices and comply with FAA regulations, whether they are using them recreationally or commercially.

If you spot unauthorized drone activity in the area, report it to the Town of Haverstraw Police Department at 845-354-1500.
