Firefighters Hospitalized Following HAZMAT Response

By Idy Perl

Several West Haverstraw and Thiells firefighters have been hospitalized after responding to a HAZMAT situation this afternoon.

West Haverstraw and Thiells firefighters responded to a call this morning regarding a smoking truck at 200 Beach Road in West Haverstraw. The truck was carrying gallons of pool water, which had chlorine and chemicals in the water.

The firefighters subsequently inhaled the chemically laced fumes from the truck, which necessitated emergency medical attention. A total of seven firefighters were affected and transported to nearby hospitals.
