A couple traveling from Monsey to Westchester Medical Center on Sunday is grateful to be safe and sound following a harrowing incident in the center
of the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle related the events to Rockland
Daily after his wife gave birth at Westchester. “We were rushing into the
hospital, and I had just gotten off the Tappan Zee Bridge when I hit a deer
head-on. We were in the center lane, with cars driving from both
sides, when my wife noticed smoke coming out of the front of the hood.
“Left with no choice, we got out of the car and rushed to
the side of the road—watching as the car rolled another few hundred feet until
it came to a stop. I called 911, and soon, fire, police, and EMS were on the
scene.”
Fire crews quickly set about extinguishing the blaze into
which the car had by now become engulfed, and the couple was transported by
ambulance to their original destination—where a healthy baby was soon born.
When the mechanic picked up the car from the site, they
searched the car for the valuables. Most of them had been destroyed either by
fire or by water—save for the tefillin, which were mostly salvaged.
