by M.C. Millman

An Erev Shabbos fire which began from an oven set to self-clean, occurred earlier this afternoon at 16 Phyllis Terrace in Monsey.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 3:32 p.m., where hundreds of onlookers were already gathered.

No injuries were reported, but the fire destroyed the kitchen and several nearby rooms. Other parts of the house suffered from smoke and water damage. Members of the Monsey Fire Department were able to carry the Sifrei Torah and seferim in the basement shul to safety as well.
