Emergency SNAP Benefits will Expire Next Month

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, once called Food Stamps, has added additional funds each month for just about three years since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

With the sunsetting of the Covid emergency, these extra funds will cease under a spending bill passed recently. This comes as food prices are skyrocketing around the country.

Under the additional allotment, families received a 15% boost in SNAP benefits, and maximum benefits were based on household size, not income. Social security counts as income for the purpose of measuring eligibility for SNAP, and increases in benefits may result in SNAP going down.

As of March, the rules will return to pre-Pandemic status.
